Stirling Castle Royal Palace and gateway

A gorgeous day at Stirling Castle.

There has been a fortification on this volcanic rocky outcrop for over a thousand years and there have been at least eighteen sieges during the time. During a fifty year period during the Scottish Ears of Independence with England the castle changed hands on eight occasions!

The last recorded siege was in 1746 when Bonnie Prince Charlies Jacobite army besieged the government held castle for three weeks before abandoning their attack and heading north to Culloden Moor near Inverness where they were defeated by government troops in less than one hour.
